Introduction to Colourbright Tested to the Limit
St. Petersburg, Russia
There can’t be many other places on earth that test road surface paint and traffic flow markings to their limits, quite like the streets of urban St. Petersburg, Russia. Frequent, high volume traffic is assisted by plunging night-time temperatures in winter, eroding road markings quicker than most “temperate” climates.
Against this challenging background, Prismo has undertaken trials in the city, to “road test” Colourbright and its safety potential. Developed uniquely by Ennis Prismo, Colourbright provides night-time visibility, through the clever use of vehicle headlights reflecting off particles embedded in the painted road surface.
When seen as an approaching driver at night, the treated road surface literally “lights” up as the car moves towards it, making oncoming drivers aware of potential hazards ahead and to adjust their driving accordingly. During the day, Colourbright acts like ordinary demarcation road surfacing.
Unlike conventional accident blackspot safety precautions, which use either expensive floodlighting or potentially vehicle damaging speed-bumps, Colourbright is a cost effective, environmentally friendly alternative, by requiring no major infrastructure work, running costs or maintenance.
Tests are currently ongoing, but the results are expected to show that Colourbright holds its own against the might of the Russian winter and the heavy traffic of St.Petersburg.
